  1. Install the extension

Add Consultant Notes to Chrome from the Web Store — or use the web app online. No sign-up needed.

  2. Open the side panel

Click the toolbar button to open the Notes panel. Pick your project, select the day, choose a note type, and type your entry.

  3. Review your week

Scroll through the weekly view to see everything you logged. Export to PDF, push to Obsidian, or sync via GitHub Gist whenever you like.

Everything a consultant needs. Nothing they don't.

For consultants, developers, freelancers, and anyone who wants a structured work log without feeding it to someone else's server.

Weekly Calendar View

See all seven days at a glance, with each day's notes stacked by project. Navigate weeks with a single click. Focus on a single day when you need a quieter view.

8 Note Types

Categorise every entry: meeting, in-progress, completed, at-risk, blocked, follow-up, idea, or general. A coloured badge on each card makes the week readable at a glance.

Project Organisation

Create as many projects as you need and switch between them in one click. Notes are scoped to the selected project so you can keep client work separate from internal tasks.

Quick-Log from Any Page

Highlight text on any webpage and click the "Log with Consultant Notes" overlay to capture it as a note — perfect for logging decisions or references without leaving the page.

Send to Obsidian

Export your week's notes directly to your Obsidian vault via the URI protocol — no plugin required. Configure vault name, target note, and a custom Markdown template.

Optional Gist Sync

Bring your own GitHub token and sync your notes across devices via a private Gist. Push ↑ to save, pull ↓ to restore — your data, your token, your Gist.

Export Week to PDF

Generate a clean PDF of your full week's notes in one click — ideal for weekly status reports or client handoffs. All notes and projects included.

JSON Backup & Restore

Export all your data as a JSON backup at any time and import it on any device. Full restore with duplicate-safe merge — your notes are portable forever.

Native Side Panel

Uses Chrome's native Side Panel API — a persistent, resizable sidebar that never covers your content. Full dark mode support. Stays open while you browse.

Privacy isn't a feature. It's the foundation.

Consultant Notes was built from day one with one rule: your work log belongs to you. There is no Consultant Notes server. No analytics SDK. No account creation. The extension only communicates with GitHub's API and your local Obsidian vault — and only when you press the sync button.

  • All notes stored in your browser's own IndexedDB
  • GitHub token stored locally, never sent anywhere except GitHub
  • No cookies, no fingerprinting, no usage tracking
  • Export your data as JSON at any time — no lock-in
  • Uninstall the extension and your data stays in your browser
  • Minimal permissions: only what's needed to run the panel

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GitHub account to use Consultant Notes?
No. All core features — weekly view, note logging, PDF export, JSON backup — work completely offline without any account. GitHub Gist sync is an optional add-on for users who want to access their notes across devices.
Where is my data stored?
In your browser's IndexedDB — local storage that stays on your device until you choose to export or sync it. Nothing is ever sent to a Consultant Notes server because there isn't one.
What happens if I uninstall the extension?
Browser storage is cleared when you uninstall. Export a JSON backup before uninstalling if you want to keep your notes. If Gist sync is set up, your data also lives in your private Gist.
Can I use Consultant Notes across multiple devices?
Yes — via the optional GitHub Gist sync. Install on each browser, point them to the same Gist, and use Push ↑ / Pull ↓ to keep devices in sync.
Is Consultant Notes free?
Yes, completely free. There are no paid tiers, no premium features, and no subscription.
Does it work with Obsidian?
Yes. Click the Obsidian export button and your week's notes are sent directly to your vault via Obsidian's URI protocol — no plugin required. Configure vault name, target note, and a custom Markdown template in Settings.
What is the web app at weekly.consultantnotes.com?
It's a standalone version of the same interface — no Chrome extension required. Great for trying Consultant Notes before installing, or for using it outside of Chrome. Your data is still stored locally in the browser.
